System Software for disruptive Memory Technologies“
Main memory, one of the central components of computer systems, has increasingly gained relevance. However, basic properties of the interface between memory and software remained the same despite increased capacities and access speeds: main memory is volatile, passive and mostly homogeneous. These assumptions also shape the expectations of software developers.
Recent developments invalidate these assumptions and thus are disruptive for industry as well as computer science research. Non-volatile memory modules in server systems as well as microcontrollers and high-bandwidth memory modules in HPC systems are already in use. In addition, current research in in- and near-memory computing is expected to enable high grades of parallelism by exploiting data locality properties.
In turn, this enables important improvements of computer system properties, e.g., the reduction of energy consumption, performance and reliability improvements, simplifications and reduced costs. However, it is still an open research question how current as well as future software and systems can make use of these innovations.

Operating Systems in Research and Industry

System Software for Dependable Computing

Computer systems are ubiquitous in our daily life. They can be found in our private environment and in commercial systems such as industrial plants or server farms. Others are embedded into vehicles and medical devices, or control important infrastructure for communication, power supply, traffic, etc. Since we entrust these systems our personal sensitive data and sometimes also our lives, they have to be absolutely dependable under any circumstance and in every possible situation.
